Parole Officer and Caver
Michael FitzPatrick, 56, a probation and parole officer with the West Virginia Division of Corrections, died of renal failure and other complications of cancer surgery December 27 at City Hospital in Martinsburg, West Virginia.
Mr. FitzPatrick, a Martinsburg resident, served for 25 ears in the West Virginia Division of Corrections, the last ten years as a probation and parole officer in the Berkely District; and taught courses in criminal justice at Shepherd College in Shepherdstown and Martinsburg.
Mr. FitzPatrick was born Feb. 27, 1945 in Albany, NY. He grew up in New York, Michigan, and Annandale, VA, graduating from O'Connell HS in Arlington in 1963. He attended Belmont Abbey College in North Carolina, and briefly was a college radio announcer and disc jockey before serving a two-year stint in the U.S. Naval Reserves in Bar Harbor, Maine from 1965 through 1967. He later married and had two sons before completing his degree at the Virginia Polytechnic Institute in 1976.
Mr. FitzPatrick was an avid coin collector and caver. He was a member of the National Speleologic Society-Cave Diving section for over 20 years, and he has authored several papers on cave search and rescue. All the awards he received through out his career the one that hung in his office was the OTR Fellowship.
A memorial service was held at Brown Funeral Home in Inwood, West Virgina on Saturday, Dec. 29, at 11:00 a.m. A wake will be held at OTR 2002 starting with a through trip of Bowden. The one trip he wanted to do.
