Adopt a Tree Program a success in 2011

Adopt a Tree at OTRDuring the budget committee of the spring of 2011, I requested up to $500 in the 2011 TRA budget for purchasing and planting trees at the OTR site. Due to the lack of excess funds and the importance of other projects, the committee was unable to fund the project.

Chris “Fang” Kramer-Harnage offered to assist in a fundraising effort during OTR and I gladly accepted her offer to help. The local County Forester, Travis Miller, was contacted and invited to the site and he visited in early April. Our long range planning Committee Chair Marshall Fausold escorted the Forester around the property and explained soil conditions and our tree requirements to him. Travis recommended several trees that would suit our needs and we settled on Oaks, Sycamores and Maples for the initial planting.

Lost and Found 2011

So OTR is over, you finally made it home and started to dry out your camping gear when you realize that you left your prize possession back at your camp site. Well, you may be in luck. A number of items have been turned into the Lost and Found. I have everything from hats, a jacket, watches, glasses, etc. Let me know what you are missing, and if I have it we can make arrangements for it to be returned to you. Before you ask, all cameras have already found their way home.

Regards,
Charlie
OTR Chair

Fundraising for First Aid

The Medical Staff of OTR is working hard to save you!  We are in need of some very important pieces of equipment, all designed to save lives: the life saved may be a friend. Or  your loved one. Or yours.  Our population is aging, let's face it! Even our younger members may benefit from the equipment.

TRICK OR TREAT AT OTR

trick-or-treatSo it’s OTR again and the theme is Halloween.  You’ve got your costume picked out . . . you’ve got decorations for your campsite . . . you’ve got lots of ideas percolating . . . but what to do with it all???  Trick or Treat!  That’s right, we’re doing a Trick or Treat event at OTR this year to encourage everyone to move around the campground and say BOO to their neighbors.  Trick or Treat will be Saturday night between 7:00 and 9:00 PM.  Host campsites will be identified by a balloon on a stick hovering over their campsite.

Hurricane Irene Update

For those who are wondering, the OTR site was untouched. Hurricane Irene has left its mark on the east coast. Flooding, downed trees and power outages. Many of our members were impacted and have clean up that needs to be taken care of. I wanted to let everyone know that during the heaviest part of the storm the OTR campground did experience just a little rain but we were on the very fringes of the storm.

NCRC Level One Entrance Requirement Workshop

Carabiner-smallDuring OTR, 2011, the Eastern Region of the NCRC will conduct a workshop to review and practice the entrance requirements for an NCRC Level 1 seminar. This workshop will be held on Saturday afternoon during OTR, but will be off-site, within easy walking distance.

Childrens Activities

On Saturday from 12-12:30 pm, children are invited to the Pavilion for participation in Children’s Activities.  We will be making Halloween Trick-or-Treat bags and masks. This will be followed by a Kid’s Costume Parade down Vendors Row at 12:30 led by our resident magician, Batman.  Please wear your costume and parade with us!

At 1 pm, Batman the Magician will wow and amaze us again with his magic show back in the Pavilion.

Newly added this year will be “Oma Sharon’s Reading Circle” located in the first camping area on the left as you cross the bridge from the Pavilion. She will be reading stories in the evening appropriate for children 3-8 yrs old. You may bring a favorite book to share and parents are invited to stay. A light snack will be provided. Check the Coot and Holler for times.
