George
Alexander "Robbie" Robertson, a native and lifetime resident
of Richmond, Virginia, served that city for most of his life as a
mechanical engineer until he retired in 1961. His varied interests
included photography, archaeology, antique silver collecting, and of
course caving.
Robbie was a caver in the early years of the
National Speleological Society (NSS). He was active in the Richmond
Grotto and an NSS director. Generally recognized as one of the
founders of the Old Timers' Reunion (along with George Dare, Gwen and
Bill Foster, Mary Robertson, and Casey Schugt), Robbie was the prime
mover and the longest-term chairman (the first five years).
Later, with assistance from his wife, Mary, he helped subsequent
chairmen. After Mary's death, he continued to attend reunions
with his second wife, Madeline. Robbie's health failed in the early
seventies.
Organizers of The Robertson Association chose
its name to pay posthumous homage and tribute to the man who did more
for the Old Timers' Reunion than any other. He and those others who
have followed have earned the gratitude of thousands of cavers for
more than (now five) three decades.
